Most swimming pools have a pH range that is between 7.2 and 7.8 which is in the neutral range. In order to drive the pH of the pool down, an acid such as HCl (hydrochloric acid) is used and in order to drive the pH of the pool up an alkali substance such as Na2CoO3 (sodium carbonate) is used. Therefore if the pH is 8.2 it would be lowered using a small amount of HCl and if it was 6.9 it would be raised using Na2CoO3.
