The American System, developed by Henry Clay, had three main points that were all focused on helping the growth of American industry.
1) Increase tariffs- Tariffs are taxes on imported goods. This would increase the cost of goods from European countries. The increased cost of these goods would make American citizens more likely to buy American made goods.
2) Development of a National Bank- This National bank would help to foster commerce in the US through loans and subsidies.
3) Money for internal improvements- This would include the expansion of railroads, canals, etc.
