At a store there are 5 vases each vase has the same number of flowers 16 flowers are sold now there are 24 flowers left how many flowers were in these vase?

Let f=number of flowers in a vase, then:

5f-16=24  add 16 to both sides

5f=40  divide both sides by 5

f=8 

So there were 8 flowers per vase in the beginning.
