When whites regained control of Southern states' governments, they began to enact on laws that oppressed blacks through segregation and disenfranchisement. . After the 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson decision, segregation became even more ensconced through a battery of Southern laws and social customs known as “Jim Crow.”
