Bens parents had general concerns about his development, and they brought him to see their gp when he was still not speaking at age 3. the gp reassured them that ben could catch up. during bens appointment with a speech and language therapist, bens words were garbled, and only his parents could understand him. the speech and language therapist reassured his parents that this would probably resolve spontaneously. why might these healthcare professionals have been reluctant to label ben?

They might have labeled him with Autism, possibly. They are reluctant because they don't know if it's Ben being a late bloomer or a mental disability. We all learn at different pastes, some faster than others and some slower. Fun fact: Albert Einstein didn't learn to speak up until he was around 4 years old. So it's different to label a child who can't speak since they themselves are developing.
