Before Portugal and other European nations began transporting slaves across the Atlantic, African were originally sold to Arab Muslims. After conquering the Africa, Arab Muslims began exporting slaves to their homes. The Muslims have misinterpreted the Qur'an claiming that those people who are not believers of Islam are acceptable source of slaves.
Before the rise of the slave trade across the Atlantic, African slavery was already well-established. The main people who benefitted from this industry were Arab people.
The Arab slave trade took place between the eight and ninth centuries. They believed that only non-Muslims could be enslaved, which meant that slavery was carried out in the frontier areas of Islam in Africa, while captured slaves were sold all over the Middle East.
