The Atlantic slave trade had an enormous negative impact on African society and its people; the slave trade tended to increase civil war in Africa itself, the slave traders did not simply go into the African countryside and kidnap which resulted in social unrest and anger, but also left lasting damages to the continent, with entrenched racism and contempt with many Africans still suffer from. In one particular way, African monarchs and leaders were convinced by Europeans to be involved in the slave trade to their own country's benefit. This led to social and civil unrest and division within the hierarchical systems of African countries.
As a result of the slave trade, African society was depopulated.
It is estimated that in the 400 years of the Atlantic Slave trade, more than 12 million Africans were shipped off from Africa to the Americas.
As a result of the slave trade, Africa was:
- robbed of valuable manpower
- saw agricultural yields decline as there were less people to farm
- suffered a massive brain drain as people of unknown and known talents were sent to other countries
The depopulation that the slave trade brought on Africa can therefore be conclusively said to have caused a lot of problems for African society and led to a serious change on the continent.
