There are 4 ways a person can become a United States citizen:
1. Being born in the U.S. or one of its territories.
2. If you were born to parents who are U.S. citizens, then you can be a U.S. citizen yourself. This is called "acquisition" of citizenship.
3. You can become a citizen through the naturalization process, which basically involves applying for and passing, a citizenship test.
4. You can become a citizen if one or both of your parents have been naturalized. This is called "derivation" of citizenship.
