In the context of International relations, the theory of balance of power implies that states may ensure their durability by checking any one state from obtaining enough martial ability to control all others. According to the theory, if any of a state is becoming much stronger it will catch recognition of its weaker neighbors, whereby encouraging them to unite in a protective alliance. Some realists state that a balance-of-power arrangement is more durable than one with a despotic state, as aggressiveness is no remuneration when there is the equilibrium of power between contending factions.
