A.The boy finally understands that the value of the chest is in preserving his family history in documents and other mementos.
"The Brown Chest" is a short story written by American writer John Updike in 1992. It tells the story of a little boy whose family has a brown chest were they keep all of their most important memories, and how that little boy grows into a grown man and his relationship with the chest throughout his life.
When the little boy, now a man, finds his own drawings inside the chest, he realizes despite trying his hardest to not get an emotional connection with the items contained in the chest, his drawings gave him a nostalgic feeling related to his childhood. He finally understands the importance of the chest in preserving his family history in documents and memories. He also comprehends that despite his best efforts, he cannot escape time, and that he is also a part of history.
