The British Parliment imposed taxes on the colonists after 1763 to pay off the debts from the French and Indian War.
Before the seven years war, the collection of taxes had not been enforced. After the war, the British Prime Minister George Grenville enforced the law again. This increased the revenue to Great Britain but increased the taxes paid by the colonists. They were very unhappy and sent letters of protest to the British Government. The increase in taxes also led to protests by the Colonies.
