Chemical bonds are broken to supply us with energy. Without bonds, and our ability to break them, the food we eat would not supply us with energy.

Metabolism refers to all of the chemical reactions occurring in the body cells of an organism for life sustenance. This includes synthesis processes such as:

  • building a larger molecule from many smaller ones e.g.  protein builds up from amino acids,
  • breaking down of larger molecules into bits and smaller ones e.g.as seen in digestive reactions, and respiratory reactions.

When metabolic activities take place, there is a release of energy in the process. This energy is stored in a form of a covalent bond, a particular type of chemical bond.

On the other hand, a chemical bond is the creation of a chemical compound by forming a chemical connection between two or several more atoms, ions, or molecules.

Chemical bonds between atoms and molecules must be broken and reformed, therefore rendering chemical bonding an important element of metabolism.
