When someone is experiencing indigestion and take an antacid, the antacid is effective. The reason why they are effective is because of one of three types that are OTC, currently.
1. Proton pump inhibitors like Nexium, Protonix, Prilosec, etc...what proton pump inhibitors do is they block/inhibit the production of gastric juices by the stomach and are long lasting.
2. H2 receptor antagonists like Pepcid AC, Zantac. What these do is inhibits histamine reactions of acid secretions from the stomach.
3. Calcium carbonate. What this does is acts as a buffer of the gastric acid. It will attempt to neutralize how much acidity is in the gastric juices from an over production.
Antacids usually levels down the acidity in the stomach and will help to ease indigestion.
What are antacids?
Antacids are medications that counterbalance (neutralize) stomach acid to soothe acid reflux and heartburn.
They are available without a prescription in pharmacies and shops as liquids or chewable tablets.
Thus, taking an antacid is effective.
