I think there is significance in developing clear reasoning power as it allows you to not be ruled by external factors or internal emotions in a way that lowers your ability to make good decisions. The poem "Where the Mind is Without Fear" seems to articulate this well. If you have the "clear stream of reason" you are not ruled by fear and can make your decisions without that block.
