Muckrakers was a term used during the Progressive era to refer to a generation of journalists that raised public awareness and denounced the corrupt practices that existed in the US public institutions and which were undertaken by political leaders and other authorities.
They could reach large audiencies because they published in large magazines, such as McClure's.
