Melissa is standing 40 ft from a tree, so m = 40 is base of the triangle.
angle of elevation (aoe) = 50°
The tree's height (h) is the side opposite the aoe (50°), therefore in trigonometry tangent 50 = opposite / adjacent. The side adjacent to that angle (50°) is the base (m). Therefore:
tan50 = h/m
And now h = m (tan50)
h = 40 (1.19) = 47.7 ft
