I just did the quiz,
1. 5
2. -1/2
3. Arithmetic
4. I didn't get that one on th quiz but i would say neither arithmetic nor geometric
5. Geometric
We want to find some terms and types of some different sequences.
The answers are:
1) a₂ = 5
2) a₃ = -1/2
3) arithmetic
4) geometric
1) We want to get the term a₂ in the sequence:
2, 5, 10, 17, ...
The subindex tells us the position of the term, a₂ is the second term in the sequence, so we have that:
a₂ = 5
2) We now want to get a₃ in the sequence:
−4, −2, −1/2, −1/4, ...
a₃ is the third term in the sequence (always counting from left to right), so here we have:
a₃ = -1/2
3) We want to see which type of sequence is:
3, 9, 15, 21, ...
Let's see the difference between consecutive terms:
9 - 3 =6
15 - 9 = 6
21 - 15 = 6
So the difference between consecutive terms is constant, meaning that this is an arithmetic sequence.
4) Same thing as above, this time for the sequence:
200, 40, 8, 1.6, ...
Clearly, this is not an arithmetic sequence, so let's look at the quotient between consecutive terms, if the quotient is always the same, then it is a geometric sequence:
40/200 = 0.2
8/40 = 0.2
1.6/8 = 0.2
So this is a geometric sequence.
