The two major revolutionary political leaders of the 1790s, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, had opposite views on how the government should be involved in building their new country. Hamilton wanted a strong central government with concentrated federal power, whereas Jefferson supported small central government with more power dispersed in local areas. The result was the birth of the first two political parties, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists, later the Democratic Republicans.
