Considering life from a new point of view is enlightening.
Ria is forced into a temporary, but new point of view and as a result is enlightened or learns something new about herself and others. The idea of a struggle by other individuals, who are "set to the side" or ignored is clearly a component of the passage. Ria is introduced to these people who possibly do not have the "temporary" status of being handicapped like Ria. Instead it is something they deal with long-term and perhaps permanently. She learns that their struggle should be appreciated and instead of being cast to the side or seen as a burden, should co-exist with her and her classmates and also be allowed to use and have access to the same facilities as Ria and her classmates.
