After Mexico obtained independence from Spain they invited people from the United States to settle the land now known as Texas. The reason was to displace the Indian population which had been a serious problem. The settlers were under the laws of Mexico but since they became the predominant population they sought independence from Mexico which later resulted in war. In 1845 the US congress voted to annex and make a state of the territory.
