Major contributors to modern biology are:-
- Carl Linnaeus:-who introduced a rational, if somewhat artificial, system of binomial nomenclature.
- Jean Baptiste Lamarck:- Give the theory of acquired characters.
- Charles Darwin:- give the theory of natural selection according to which minute variations in offspring were either favored or eliminated in the competition for survival, and it permitted the idea of evolution to be perceived with great clarity
- Theodor Schwann and Matthias Schleiden:- give the cell theory which explains that cell is the basic unit of living beings
- Louis Pasteur:- shows that bacteria were shown to be the specific causes of many diseases. By means of immunological methods first devised by Pasteur, some of humankind’s chief maladies were brought under control.
- Gregor Mendel:- discovered the basic principles of heredity and laid the mathematical foundation of the science of genetics.
- Hugo De Varies:- proposed the mutation theory of evolution.
- Watson and Crick:- gives the model of DNA which explains, the two strands of the DNA double helix are held together by hydrogen bonds between nitrogenous bases on opposite strands.
