if you want to find x+y its gonna be easier to find each of them first so you can say : x+2y = 1 x + 2y = 1
2x + y = 5 ⇒ so you can multiply one of them by -2 ⇒ -4x - 2y = -10
so both of the y are gonna be gone now you have : -3x = -9 ⇒ x = 3 so y gonna be : 2(3) + y = 5 ⇒6 + y = 5 ⇒y = -1 niw you have both y and x so x+y gonna be :
3 - 1 = 2 :)))
i hope this be helpful

x+2y = 1 and 2x + y = 5
Let us first transform one equation.
x+2y = 1
-2y -2y
x= 1-2y
Now, we do the substitution method.
2(1-2y) +y = 5
Now solve for y.
2- 4y + 1y = 5
2 - 3y = 5
-2 -2
-3y = 3
-3y/-3 = 3/-3
y= -1
Now we know that y= -1
Now we apply it to one equation to solve for x.
x+2(-1) = 1
x+-2 = 1
x-2=1
+2 +2
x=3
Now we know that x= 3
Now we can apply it to the last equation.
x+y=?
3-1 = ?
3-1=2
Final answer: 3-1=2
