Victor Klemperer was a scholar who, in his diaries, expressed dismay at what he saw as the Nazi movement more and more took over Germany. He suggested that most Germans saw Hitler as a prince of peace who was going to bring strength and success to Germany over against weakness they thought was shown by France and England and the Soviet Union.
Victor Klemperer was Jewish, but since his wife Eva was of full "Aryan" ancestry he had been able to avoid the full persecutions against Jews in Germany during Hitler's regime. They were made to live in a rather miserable group lodging house for mixed couples like themselves. During the war, in 1945, they managed to escape into territory controlled by American forces.
Here's another sidenote: The actor Werner Klemperer who starred in the old television show "Hogan's Heroes" was a cousin of Victor Klemperer.
