The US Presidential election of 1936 was one of the biggest landslides in the 20th century. In this race, President Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Alfred M. Landon, who only won the states of Maine and Vermont. This crushing defeat was thanks to Roosevelt's New Deal, a government program that helped to employ millions of Americans all over the country. This New Deal helped in decreasing the unemployment rate in America, which was at an extremely high rate due to the Great Depression.
