I believe that the importance of religion died down throughout the years in the colonies because of religious toleration, meaning that the colonies did not care what a person's religion was. However, I am not sure about this answer, so I cannot say for sure if this is correct or not. Throughout the years in the Americas, wars broke out over land and independence.
