The tide that arose from the civil rights campaign produced, as King had expected, powerful influence on national opinion and led to the ratification of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, granting the federal government to enact the integration of public accommodation and forbid discrimination in public facilities and work. This crucial year resulted in an award to King for the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo in December.
