Pancreas is a mixed gland as it acts as both exocrine and endocrine gland. As an exocrine land, it secretes digestive enzymes into pancreatic duct and as an endocrine gland, it secretes hormones into blood.

The endocrine part of pancreas is known as Islet of Langerhans which is a group of different types of cells.

  • Alpha cells produce, stores and secretes hormone glucagon. It regulates blood glucose, in case low blood glucose levels it stimulate release of glucose in the blood.
  • Beta cells produce, store and secrete hormone insulin. It regulates blood glucose, in case high blood, it decrease blood glucose level and Store glucose in the form of glycogen in liver and muscles.
  • Delta cells produce peptide hormone somatostatin. Pancreatic somatostatin inhibits the release of both glucagon and insulin.
