Describe the features of the North Atlantic Ocean bottom that are forming due to sea floor spreading.

Respuesta :

Sea-floor spreading occurs when the sea floor spreads apart along divergent boundaries and forms the mid-ocean ridge. Magma is pushed up through cracks in the crust along the mid-ocean ridge. As the magma builds up and hardens it forms a new crust and the ocean floor on both sides of the mid-ocean ridge move outward.

Answer:

Seafloor spreading is a result of the movement of the tectonic plates because of mantle convection. The seafloor spreading in the Atlantic ocean is causing an increase in the volume of the ocean basin and a decrease in sea level as the deep rifts formed because of the floor spreading is displaced by an enormous volume of water which is eventually shallowing the sea level.

Explanation:

  • Seafloor spreading gives rise to the newer oceanic crust at mid-ocean ridge like the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which separates the North American Plate from  the Eurasian Plate.
  • The effects of sea floor spreading can be described as the sinking of the Atlantic ocean which results in the formation of:
  1. deep ocean trenches
  2. increased volcanic activities as it gives rise to new weak spots on earth's crust
  3. increased seismic activities.
  • The rate of seafloor spreading of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is 2-5 cm every year.
  • Seafloor spreading increases the density of the ocean floors.
