I would say it is still popular today because it has a different feel and look that attracts our eyes. 
I think gothic style is still popular today in books and movies maybe because most people don't like bright colors, it makes them feel like a bad butt and they want everyone to know it, or because people stay away from gothic people and other people who don't want attention or to be around people dress up all gothic so they will stay away from them. I remember I used to dress up in all black 5th and 4th grade because the bullies would always get scared of me and run away. In books, it's popular because there is always a creepy character and well gothic is creepy. It's just the same with movies, a creepy character needs a creepy style. Oh, and just in real life some people think it's cool.
