A. Human relationships are full of pain and cruelty.

In the Endgame, Hamm and Clov have a master/servant relationship. Often Hamm is cruel to Clov, but Clov can't just leave because he is dependent on Hamm for food and shelter. The novel explores how human relationships are full of pain and cruelty using the relationship of Hamm and Clov. In this passage specifically, Hamm is apologizing for his cruelty to Clov, but Clov doesn't seem to accept his apology or trust in it.
