Photovoltaic technology is best described as 'using sunlight to generate electricity. The technology involves using cells that produce direct current (dc) voltage when light shines unto its surface. These cells are called photovoltaic cells. They convert light energy directly into electrical energy. No outside source of electricity is needed to produce current.
