One of Ernest Hemingway's techniques as a writer is keeping everything muted. His texts are what the literary would call the "writerly text". He always uses bare descriptions for his characters and setting so that the reader will be the ones to imagine or assume everything. He would not give vivid details of the scene. Readers are supposed to infer, to DIY. In this regard, readers are able to participate more in the story.
