Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam were a part of France's Expansion into Southeast Asia in the 1900s.
By strengthening the central authority over local chiefs and opening trade to Europe, Thailand remained free under a strong and stable monarchy. But France colonized Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia to proclaim the French Indochina Union in 1887. Colonization had an enormous impact on the population and economies of the region.
