Simple....

so you have: [tex] \frac{7}{8}-(- \frac{3}{8} )[/tex]

There's the law where if the number outside your parentheses is negative along with the number in the parentheses; it converts into positive...

-->>x-(-x)
--->>x+(+x)

This being said.....

[tex] \frac{7}{8} - (-\frac{3}{8} )[/tex]

-->> [tex] \frac{7}{8} +(+ \frac{3}{8} )[/tex]

-->>>[tex] \frac{10}{8} [/tex]

But remember, you want to simplify it....

[tex] \frac{10}{8} = \frac{5}{4} [/tex] (Decimal form..1.25)

Thus, your answer.
The answer is negative 1 1/4
