Based on the principle of moral obligation, the action of helping a person in severe need is indeed appropriate. There are two reasons for this:

  • The cost to self is little;
  • The need is severe;
  • If the situation were reversed, one would look forward to such help.

What is the principle of moral obligation?

An obligation that is triggered with respect to whether or not a situation is right or wrong is called a moral obligation.

There are two types of moral obligations:

  • Perfect Moral Obligation: Example, the obligation not to steal or kill. Here, there is no room for avoidance.
  • Imperfect Moral Obligation: The example is given in the question. Here there is some flexibility because it depends on the capacity of the person who is in the benevolent position.
