Allen makes a cell by dipping a plate of zinc into a solution of zinc sulphate, and a plate of copper into a solution of copper (II) sulphate. The solutions were separated by a porous partition.The two metals were connected with a wire and a bulb in series.
a) What happens to the bulb?
b)Changes take place at the zinc and copper electrodes. i)What happens to the zinc atoms? ii)Write an ionic equation to show what happens at the copper electrode.

Respuesta :

The zinc anode is oxidized while the copper cathode is reduced.

What is an electrochemical cell?

An electrochemical cell is a cell that produces energy by chemical reactions. It contains an anode and a cathode.

1) Once the two half cells are connected, the bulb lights up.

2) At the anode, the zinc atoms are converted to zinc ions thereby releasing electrons.

3) At the copper cathode, electrons are accepted as follows;

Cu^2+(aq) + 2e -----> Cu(s)
