Epidermis is the outermost layer of skin in our body. It protects the body from harm, keeps body hydrated, produces new skin cells and contains melanin, which determines the skin color.

The epidermis does not contain any blood vessels, therefore it is called avascular. Cells in the deepest layers get nourished by the diffusion from blood capillaries present in the upper layers of the dermis. Diffusion provides nourishment and and also removal of waste from the cells of the dermis.

Outermost layer of the skin depends on the underlying dermis for the supply of nutrients and disposal of waste as there is no direct blood supply to the epidermis. The dermis has sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, blood vessels and nerve endings.
