The Spanish Civil war was fought between 1936 and 1939. It started with a military coup leaded by General Franco, who had gathered a lot of support within the Spanish army and they all sublevated against the democratically-elected right wing Republican goverment.
Franco leaded the Nationalists, and was supported by another fascists leaders, such as Salazar (fascist Portuguese dictador), Mussolini or Hitler. The Spanish civil war was considered a proxy war where European superpowers tested their weapons, especially those who were on Franco's side that provided an unlimited supply of weapons to the Nationalists. Franco managed to win the war in 1939 and his dictatorship would end up lasting until his death in 1975.
